War Resisters Support Campaign

I came to Canada 23 October 1968 from Jacksonville, Florida via Hartford, Connecticut, where I had been attending university and working part time at the Connecticut Halfway House for former offenders.

For the past 38 years I have worked in social services as a welfare worker, hostel worker and presently as the Housing Coordinator at Evangel Hall Mission’s Housing Support Dept.

Community work has included three years as Chair of the Federation of Metro Tenants’ Association, board member of the Alexandra Park Housing Cooperative and six years as a member of the Canadian Friends Service Committee and its Executive Committee. I have been a long term advocate of the abolition of prisons as they exist today, working for many years with the Quaker Committee on Jails and Justice and its successor, Quakers Fostering Justice, toward that long term goal. Work in the abolition field has included jail visitation with inmates at the Don Jail, Metro West Detention Centre and the Milton Jail.

Currently, I am volunteering with the War Resisters Support Campaign to assist U.S. armed forces personnel who have sought refuge in Canada as conscientious objectors to the unprovoked attack on Iraq.
